In 2013, EMP Museum (now MoPOP) opened a new exhibition—Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic—showcasing props, costumes, and artifacts from the great fantasy films, books, and TV shows. Belle & Wissell was brought in to design a series of interactive installations to further explore the characters, worlds, and themes of the genre.
I led development for two interactive experiences—the Archetypes Interactive and Fantasy Photo Booth.
Archetypes Interactive
Archetypes is multitouch interactive table that explores the classic character archetypes in the fantasy genre—from the Wise Wizard and Trickster to the Magical Prodigy and Maiden Warrior. Each archetype is imaginatively portrayed through watercolor illustrations by artist Stacey Rozich.
Visitors can flip archetype cards to dive deeper and view examples of each archetype role from popular culture or take a quiz to discover which archetype best fits their personality.
Fantasy Photobooth
The final experience in the exhibit is the Fantasy Photobooth which give visitors a chance to become one of the fantasy character archetypes.
Visitors choose their favorite archetype and take a photo, which is processed using Adobe Pixel Bender filters to add a watercolor texture and merged with their character. The merged portrait can then be customized with their name, a background scene, and personality attributes which are woven into a story that appears next to their character.
Finished portraits are displayed in a digital gallery and shared to MoPOP's Flickr feed.
